CHC Update – 9/28 7:30pm Planning Commission mtg, be there!

Greetings friends!

The legal opinion from our friends at PennFuture is that the ZHB’s conditions for MDS’s well at Yellow Creek add important regulatory and enforcement mechanisms that MDS would otherwise not be subject to. We’re fortunate that MDS appears to be eager to follow the conditions. However, not all companies will be as invested in our community.

Wednesday, 9/28 @ 7:30pm
300 Indian Spring Road
EVERYONE should get there!!
  • Anyone who lives in the conservation zone who doesn’t want deep shale drilling there should make their voice heard.
  • Anyone who lives in Indiana county and wants our planning commission to protect our natural resources should make their voice heard.
  • Anyone who lives in Pennsylvania and is tired of the status quo of “drill first, ask questions later” should make their voice heard!

We need a huge turn-out to make sure the county knows that we demand clear protection. They should adopt the amendment to protect the conservations zones, and eliminate gas and oil drilling, strip mining, and other industrial activities.

Other important upcoming events:
Tuesday, 9/27
EPA Hearing
There is at least one car going to these hearings from Indiana. Please contact me ASAP if you’re planning on going, or would like to go and/or carpool.  These hearings are on important air quality standards that the EPA has proposed to restrict air pollution from the fracking industry. They’re asking for public coment from all residents of PA, and our partners at the Sierra Club want to help us get there.

Some report backs from meetings this week:
Wed. Commissioner’s meeting:
Thanks to Dan, Kathy, and Dana for coming out to the Commissioner’s public meeting on Wednesday. The Blairsville Dispatch article here caught the proceedings best. As usual, the commissioners were appreciative.

Planning Commission Meeting:
Wednesday was also the latest planning commission meeting. Beth Marshal was on hand to discuss the Zoning Board’s decision. One planning commission member suggested that the county should provide resources for community groups like ours so that we can actually afford to bring in paid experts – since anyone that testified in favor of the YC drill site was on the industry payroll.

There’s a lot of reasons why that great idea wouldn’t work, but it’s a good sign that at least this planning commission member saw the David and Goliath battle we’re fighting against the industry.

Otherwise, not much was accomplished or decided, and the county failed to produce any outside experts. Again.

Their next meeting is Wednesday 9/28 @ 7:30. We need EVERYONE to pack this meeting, and sign up to speak in favor of CHC’s amendment to prohibit drilling in the CZ!!
