Planning Commission meeting #5

With potentially distracting recent events, we need a BIG crowd to focus the County Planning Commission’s attention. Their charge is to protect the conservation zones – and the only way to do that is to adopt the amendment, eliminating gas and oil drilling, strip mining, and other industrial activities.
EVERYONE should be there!!
  • Anyone who lives in the conservation zone who doesn’t want deep shale drilling there should make their voice heard.
  • Anyone who lives in Indiana county and wants our planning commission to protect our natural resources should make their voice heard.
  • Anyone who lives in Pennsylvania and is tired of the status quo of “drill first, ask questions later” should make their voice heard!

They should adopt the amendment to protect the conservations zones, and eliminate gas and oil drilling, strip mining, and other industrial activities.

Visual Assessment Training
Mountain Watershed Association
October, Time/Date: TBA
The folks at Mountain Watershed Association will be coming to give a presentation to Indiana County about their Marcellus Citizen Stewardship Project. The project offers basic trainings– called Visual Assessment Trainings—that provide information on monitoring Marcellus shale development. Participants will learn to use their senses of sight, hearing and smell to identify potential issues resulting from drilling operations; this approach is unique because no technical equipment is necessary.  Visual Assessment Trainings also provide information on permitting and regulations, air and water pollution, filing a complaint, and safety.  After completing this basic training, participants will have the opportunity to sign up for further instruction in air or water monitoring.

Stay tuned for details!!

Building Change – A Convergence for Social Justice
October 13 – 15
Senator John Heinz Regional History Center,
Pittsburgh, PA

Keynote speaker, renowned economist and environmentalist Winona LaDuke, October 13, 6pm

I’d like to go to this, and it’s a great opportunity for CHC to network and learn from other social justice organizations across the region. Anyone want to come?
The first-ever gathering of people and organizations from across Southwestern Pennsylvania – community members and leaders, human services providers and small business owners, union members, grantmakers, filmmakers, artists, entertainers, media representatives, people from all backgrounds and interests – who share a common goal of advancing social justice and change in our region and world. A three-day, open attendance conference on social justice and change for the 10-county Southwestern Pennsylvania region. Events include workshops, training sessions, plenary sessions, a Keynote Address by renowned economist and environmentalist Winona LaDuke, panel discussions, the Building Change Film Festival, a Social Justice Arts Show, an Internship Fair, entertainment, Youth Leading Change event, and more.
