CHC Update: Community Meetings This Week!

Greetings friends,

It’s a busy week for CHC with opportunities for you to speak out about drilling and about development overall in our county.
Ordinance update – CHC to support lawsuit against Act 13
At our steering committee meeting this week we agreed that CHC would circulate a letter supporting the lawsuit brought against the zoning pre-emptions contained in Act 13, passed this past spring. Act 13 ties “one, possibly two hands” behind the backs of municipal planners across the state in protecting against the hazards presented by Marcellus drilling.  This includes our county planners, who are struggling to maintain the integrity of the Conservation Zone Ordinance in the face of Act 13.  We will circulate our support letter to township officials in Indiana County.

IUP Anthropology Department wants to talk to you!
Have Opinions About Fracking in Indiana County?  IUP Anthropology students wants to hear what you think.  Be part of the study, come out this Wednesday, July 18th 6-8 p.m. Indiana Free Public Library”  This event is part of a summer field school where students will be looking to see how the Marcellus boom is affecting people in Indiana County. Whether or not students know it, this field school is sort of awesome, their guest speaker list includes Sen. White, Rep. Reed, Comm. Ruddock, Paul Hart, Craig Neal, Dr. Simona Perry, Mark Syzbist, and features tours of frackwater treatment plants and Consul’s giant fracking complex over the Beaver Run Reservoir, visual assessment training from Mountain Watershed, and a boat ride on Yellow Creek Lake.  The event this week is to make sure these students also hear from citizens of Indiana County.

Meet your County Comprehensive Plan!
The County Comprehensive Plan is on tour and the vision is clear: Indiana County enjoys a prosperous
economy while preserving its rural character and small town quality of life.  This 400+ page document called Where We LIve, is the result of nearly a decade of work by the planning department. In addition to the entire plan, there are easily digestible posters that you can download here, which describe cross-cutting issues like natural gas development.
Or better yet, check them out live and ask your county planners about how this plan will be implemented.
